There is not much information about the history of Plainview. Most of the information I have is based on town events that I have witnessed, stories I have heard from others, and what my Grandmother, Irene Baker, has told me.
Today:
Plainview, Arkansas is in Yell County. Today, as of the 2000 census, there are 755 people. It is likely that number has risen slightly since then. Most of the tourist attractions of the area are Sunlight Bay of Nimrod Lake (about 5 miles outside of town) and the Nimrod Dam at the Fourche La Fave River (about 20 minutes outside of town).
Inside the town, today, there is not much. There is a Post Office, a gas station, two cafes, a small public library, an elementary school (which will not be there much longer), City Hall, and VFW building. There are a few beauty parlors and a barber shop (Joe's Barber Shop), and quite a few churches. There is also a volunteer fire department. The rest of Plainview is residential.
Plainview-Rover is no more:
I graduated from Plainview-Rover High School in 2009. At this time, they were building a new school just a few minutes outside of town, where three other schools from the area were being consolidated. The district is know today at the Two-Rivers School District and the building currently has high school only. There is some talk about elementary classes being pull out of the old Plainview-Rover building, as well.
Frontier Day Fueled by Decorative Town
Since Plainview's 100th anniversary, the city decided to create a new tradition within the small town. Frontier Day is a celebration for what Plainview is at heart: It is a historical place where its best days were the old days. To give the feel of this, small old-fashioned buildings were built and were made to look like a town from the early 1900s. There are events that accommodate this small town within the town and creates excitement amongst many residents. This is a relatively new celebration, and yet, it is one where Plainview will surely celebrate until the town disappears.
